Microbial diversity and biogenic methane potential of a thermogenic-gas coal mine

    No full text
The microbial communities and biogenic methane potential of a gas coal mine were investigated by cultivation-independent and cultivation-dependent approaches. Stable carbon isotopic analysis indicated that in situ methane in the coal mine was dominantly of a thermogenic origin. However, a high level of diversity of bacteria and methanogens that were present in the coal mine was revealed by 454 pyrosequencing, and included various fermentative bacteria in the phyla of Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria, and acetotrophic, hydrogenotrophic, and methylotrophic methanogens. Methane was produced in enrichments of mine water samples supplemented with acetate under laboratory conditions. The microbial flora obtained from the enrichments could stimulate methane formation from coal samples. 16S rRNA gene clone library analysis indicated that the microbial community from coal cultivation samples supplemented with the enriched microbial consortium was dominated by the anaerobic fermentative Clostridiales and facultative acetoclastic Methanosarcina. This study suggests that the biogenic methane potential in the thermogenic-gas coal mine could be stimulated by the indigenous microorganisms

Market Stability Switches in a Continuous-Time Financial Market with Heterogeneous Beliefs

By considering a financial market of fundamentalists and trend followers in which the price trend of the trend followers is formed as a weighted average of historical prices, we establish a continuous-time financial market model with time delay and examines the impact of time delay on market price dynamics. Conditions for the stability of the fundamental price in terms of agents' behavior parameters and time delay are obtained. In particular, it is found that an increase in time delay can not only destabilize the market price but also stabilize an otherwise unstable market price, leading to stability switching as delay increases. This interesting phenomena shed new light in understanding of mechanism on the market stability. When the fundamental price becomes unstable through Hopf bifurcations, suffcient conditions on the stability and global existence of the periodic solution are obtained.asset price; fundamentalists; trend followers; delay differential equations; stability; bifurcations

Fast Approximation of the Shapley Values Based on Order-of-Addition Experimental Designs

Shapley value is originally a concept in econometrics to fairly distribute both gains and costs to players in a coalition game. In the recent decades, its application has been extended to other areas such as marketing, engineering and machine learning. For example, it produces reasonable solutions for problems in sensitivity analysis, local model explanation towards the interpretable machine learning, node importance in social network, attribution models, etc. However, its heavy computational burden has been long recognized but rarely investigated. Specifically, in a dd-player coalition game, calculating a Shapley value requires the evaluation of d!d! or 2d2^d marginal contribution values, depending on whether we are taking the permutation or combination formulation of the Shapley value. Hence it becomes infeasible to calculate the Shapley value when dd is reasonably large. A common remedy is to take a random sample of the permutations to surrogate for the complete list of permutations. We find an advanced sampling scheme can be designed to yield much more accurate estimation of the Shapley value than the simple random sampling (SRS). Our sampling scheme is based on combinatorial structures in the field of design of experiments (DOE), particularly the order-of-addition experimental designs for the study of how the orderings of components would affect the output. We show that the obtained estimates are unbiased, and can sometimes deterministically recover the original Shapley value. Both theoretical and simulations results show that our DOE-based sampling scheme outperforms SRS in terms of estimation accuracy. Surprisingly, it is also slightly faster than SRS. Lastly, real data analysis is conducted for the C. elegans nervous system and the 9/11 terrorist network

Profiling population-level diversity and dynamics of Accumulibacter via high throughput sequencing of ppk1

Abstract(#br)As the key organism for enhanced biological phosphorus removal, Accumulibacter has shown high intragenus diversity based on the phylogeny of polyphosphate kinase1 gene ( ppk1 ) and many clade-specific features related to performance of wastewater treatment. However, the widely used molecular approaches are deficient or cost-inefficient in providing a comprehensive and quantitative population-level profile for Accumulibacter in complex community. In this study, we introduced a pipeline to analyze the population-level diversity and dynamics of Accumulibacter via high throughput sequencing (HTS) of ppk1 and 16S rRNA gene simultaneously. The HTS approach was assessed by testing primer coverage, performing sample replication, and comparing with a traditional clone library. Based..
